Humanities Core Workshops

LARC writing workshops are offered several times weekly throughout the quarter, for the convenience of UCI students. Workshops are available on a drop-in basis for students who want to get immediate assistance with their writing assignments. Workshops are not classes. Regular attendance is not required, just drop-in on the day of the workshop.

Humanities Core workshops are designed specifically for students enrolled in that course and are based on current essay assignments. LARC workshops leaders work closely with Humanities Core staff to offer expert assistance in reading assigned texts and writing successful analytical essays.

Our professional writing staff help students clarify their assignments, focus topics, write thesis statements, and organize and support their analysis.

Workshops are ideal for asking questions, getting started with your paper, or checking your progress!

When new essays are assigned, new workshops begin. During the two-three weeks you are working on your essays, the workshops are not all the same. The purpose changes as students develop their essays. Thus,
  • Week 1
    • Understanding your assignment
    • Getting started
    • Thesis development
  • Week 2
    • Organization
    • Thesis workshop
  • Week 3
    • Revising
    • Final Questions
Often when papers are due, workshops fill up. In these situations, it is difficult to assist 8-10 students with their entire papers in about an hour. If your workshop is full, please select particular aspects or certain passages of your essay that you would like the Writing Specialist to help you with.

Attending one workshop per essay is required in order to make an appointment with a Writing Specialist. The reason for this is to provide all students with a base level of understanding and development to prepare students for the individual session. This not only keeps students on-track, but also makes for more productive individual sessions.
