Registration for PAL Groups
When will
the PAL session schedule for next quarter be available?
Winter and Spring schedules are generally posted immediately after finals week. Fall and Summer schedules are posted about one weeks before the start of those quarters. We understand that you are trying to plan your
schedule, but LARC is trying to make the schedule as final as possible
before posting.
When will
I be able to register for a PAL session?
During the academic year, regular sign-ups generally begin at 12:01 am on the Saturday before Week
1 of classes. You can confirm this by checking the LARC website a week or two prior to the start of classes.
During summer session, enrollment is at the LARC office (RH 284), and the dates and times that enrollment begins are posted on the LARC website about a week in advance.
How do I
register for a PAL session?
During the academic year, registering for LARC is like registering for any other class at UCI.
Find the course code on the LARC website (or on WebSOC) and
register through WebReg. You will be billed at the end of the quarter.
During summer session, enrollment is at the LARC office (RH 284) only, and you must pay (cash or check only) when enrolling.
What is
the latest time I can register for a PAL session?
During the academic year, the sign-up window closes at 5:00 pm on
Friday of the 6th week.
During summer session, Friday afternoon of the 4th week is the deadline for adds.
Other Questions about the PAL program
Who are PAL sessions led by?
Our sessions are led by an undergraduate PAL leader or a recently graduated PAL leader who has
excelled in the course, been recommended by faculty, and trained in
small group instruction. There are generally 12-15 students per group which meets twice a week for an hour each time.
When do
PAL sessions begin?
PAL sessions begin during week 1 on a Wednesday (if your
session is M/W) or Thursday (if your session is on T/TH).
On my EEE, it says
the location of my PAL session will be TBA. Where will my PAL session take place?
Check the LARC website under your PAL session daily to see if we have
updated the room where your class will be: www.larc.uci.edu.
It says
RH, or SST as the location for my PAL session. Where is that?
RH is the acronym for Rowland Hall and SST is the acronym for Social
Science Tower. For a full list of
building abbreviations, go here.
It says lecture A,
B, C, D, etc. on the LARC website, how do I know which lecture I am in?
If you check WebSoc, your class lecture will have a designated letter
that corresponds to your professor. LARC very strongly encourages you to take a session
that corresponds with your lecture.
If I
signed up for a PAL session with a leader who is teaching the same
subject but under a different professor, is that okay?
It would be more beneficial to you to have a leader
corresponding with your lecture since some instructors go at different
paces and may go over/skip different materials, but it is your choice. There is no refund if you are dissatisfied because the PAL session content does not align with your lecture.
I am enrolled in an honors course (e.g. Chem H2A), but want to take a PAL session for the general course (e.g. Chem 1A), is that okay?
The honors series courses go at different
paces and may go over/skip different materials or go over material in a different order, but it is your choice. There is no refund if you are dissatisfied because the PAL session content does not align with your course.
Can I
attend the PAL session if I am waitlisted and ask the leader if it's
okay?
NO, waitlisted students must wait until they are added before attending. Leaders will not
allow you to attend their session if you are waitlisted; this is LARC's
policy.
What are
my chances of being added if I am on the waitlist?
It varies. There's no guarantee that you will be added. If another
student who is in that PAL session has two unexcused absences, he/she will be dropped and you will be moved up on the waitlist.
Alternatively, check the LARC website to see if any additional sessions may have been added for your course.
If I
change my PAL session, will I be charged an extra fee?
It depends on the type of change. You can change between PAL sessions that are in the same subject, e.g., from one Chem 1A session to another Chem 1A session for no extra charge.
If you change sessions from one subject to another, there will be an extra charge. The amount of the charge depends on the exact situation and is explained here.
If I was dropped from my PAL session, but attended 1 or 2 sessions of the PAL session; will I still have to pay?
Yes. Please refer to the LARC fees
& policy page,
If I drop myself from my PAL session, but attended 1 or 2 sessions of the PAL session; will I still have to pay?
Yes. Please refer to the LARC fees
& policy page.
When do I pay for the PAL program?
PAL sessions are $100 and are billed at the end of a quarter. Fees may be paid online through your Zot Account.
Are LARC scholarships available?
LARC does not offer any scholarships or support for PAL session fees; however, other departments at UCI may provide scholarships or support. Students may be eligible for LARC scholarships through Student Support Services (SSS). Please check with a SSS staff member by the end of 2nd week of any quarter to see if you qualify. The Student Support Services Office is located on the second floor of the Student Services II building, across from Zot n' Go on Ring Road.
